If we're all being honest, handing over the care of your cat to someone new can feel… scary. Even if you know they’re a pro, it’s still your fur-baby we’re talking about.

So, if you’ve found yourself asking a million questions before booking a cat sitter, you’re not alone. We’ve gathered some of the most common questions cat parents asked in 2024 - and answered them in one handy place.

Whether you’re planning a holiday or just need a helping hand (because life gets busy!), here’s what to know before handing over the treats and litter scoop.

“What will my cat sitter actually do?”

Great question—and an important one! While each sitter is different, here’s what’s usually included:

  • Feeding your feline (and sticking to any routines or schedules)
  • Scooping litter boxes (yes, daily!)
  • Playtime & cuddles (if your cat is into that sort of thing)
  • Fresh water top-ups (including all those cups scattered around)
  • Basic home care, like bringing in post or watering a plant or two

Some sitters (myself included) also offer medicine administration. While I don't offer overnight stays, some sitters do! It’s always best to ask in advance. If your cat is older, nervous, or needs extra TLC, an overnight visit might be a better fit.

“Can I meet them first?”

Absolutely - please do!

A meet-and-greet is the best way to check if your sitter and your cat get along. You’ll also get a chance to go through your cat’s routine, point out the important stuff (like where you hide the Dreamies), and make sure everyone feels comfortable.

Then, if you're all happy, you can exchange keys and complete the final booking arrangements!

“What if my sitter cancels last minute?”

Life happens - but luckily, most good sitters have backup options if they can’t make it. If you're booking through a platform like Rover, they have backup options in place, too.

It’s also a good idea to have a local friend or neighbour on standby, just in case something unexpected comes up while you’re away.

“Do sitters stay overnight?”

Some do, some don’t. Daily drop-ins are usually the norm, but if your cat gets anxious or has health needs, overnight stays can offer a bit more stability.

You can usually see this info on the sitter’s profile/website or just ask before the meet-and-greet (so you don't end up wasting your time if they don't offer this and you really need it!)

“What if my cat has a very specific routine?”

I love a cat with a schedule. Most sitters are used to following care instructions to the letter - whether that’s warming up food, using a certain brush, or singing a little song at dinnertime (no judgement). Just make sure to go over it clearly before you leave.

“How Can I Trust My Cat Sitter?”

Most reputable platforms run ID checks, and sitters often have reviews from previous clients. Some also have police checks or pet first aid training - check their profile or ask directly. Trust your gut here.

I'm proud to have a clean DBS check (available on request), as well as full insurance, plus 5 star reviews!

“How does the key handover work?”

Ideally, you’ll hand over the key at your meet-and-greet. Show your sitter how to lock/unlock the door, and make sure they keep your key until you’re safely home again - just in case of delays.

Most sitters prefer to hand your key back to you directly as it's much safer than popping it through the letterbox.

“What happens in an emergency?”

Leave clear instructions for emergencies, including:

  • Your vet’s contact info
  • The nearest out-of-hours clinic
  • An emergency contact / friend or family member your sitter can call if needed

Most sitters will also check in with you (and the platform) immediately if something goes wrong. It’s rare, but it helps to have a plan in place.

“Is hiring a cat sitter expensive?”

Not necessarily! Drop-in visits are usually more affordable than boarding and way less stressful for your cat.

Rates vary depending on your area and the level of care needed (overnight stays cost more, for example). You can browse sitter profiles to find someone that fits your budget.

As of May 2025, my rates are £15 per 30 minute drop-in visit.

“How do payments work?”

At Hoppiness Pet Care, I ask for payment via bank transfer 2 days before the start of your visits.

If booking through an app like Rover, payments are typically handled through the booking platform, which keeps everything secure and traceable.

“What if I have more than one cat?”

Most sitters charge per household, not per cat. That said, if you’ve got a full clowder (more than three cats), some sitters might charge a little extra to cover the extra care time. You should discuss this prior to the meet & greet.

“Will I get photo updates?”

Yes! I and most sitters will send you daily updates, complete with cute pics and little notes about what your cat’s been up to. I'll also let you know what care tasks have been completed and how they went.

It's important to let your sitter know how often you want updates - some people like daily check-ins, others prefer a message every few days. I'll usually update you after every check-in!

“Can I contact the sitter while I’m gone?”

Of course! It's nerve wracking when your baby is in the care of someone you might not have met before.

You can usually message them through the platform or swap numbers at the meet-and-greet. Whatever helps you feel more at ease while you’re away.

It’s completely normal to feel a little anxious about leaving your cat with someone new. But with the right sitter, good communication, and a sprinkle of preparation, you can rest easy knowing your cat is in safe hands - and probably napping in all the places they’re not supposed to.

Going away soon and need help with a cat sitter? Drop me a message - I'm always happy to help. 🐾
