Cats may not use words, but that doesn’t mean they’re not chatting with us all the time beyond just a meow. One of the biggest ways our feline friends share how they’re feeling is with their tails - they're expressive little mood meters!
Here’s a guide to many of the different ways cats use their tails to say “hello,” “back off,” or “I’m not so sure about that.” Once you start paying attention, you’ll spot all sorts of little clues about how your cat is doing. By really listening to their needs and emotions, you can hugely strengthen your bond with them!
Tail Straight Up
This is your cat’s version of a happy wave. A tail held high usually means:
“Hi! I’m feeling confident and friendly.”
You’ll often see this when your cat trots over to greet you. If the tip of their tail is gently curved like a question mark or hook, they’re pleased to see you and are inviting interaction.
Tail Straight Up and Quivering
If your cat’s tail goes upright and vibrates a little, like a fluffy antenna, it’s usually a sign of excitement or affection.
“Oh! It’s YOU! Yay!”
Some cats also do this when marking their territory (especially if they back up to a wall), so keep an eye on the context... You don't want to get this one muddled up 😂
Tail Tucked Low
When a cat lowers or tucks their tail under their body, they’re feeling unsure, scared, or are in pain.
“I don’t feel safe right now.”
This can happen at the vet, when meeting new people, if something suddenly spooked them, or if they are unwell.
Tail Swishing Side to Side
A slowly swaying or flicking tail is often a sign of irritation or overstimulation. If the swishing speeds up or gets more intense, it’s a good idea to give your cat some space. They might be close to swatting or walking away.
Depending on the context, it could also mean they’re focussed on something like a toy, another pet, or something outside. They might be getting ready to pounce!
Stalking and pouncing are natural, healthy behaviors, so it’s great to let them stay engaged with whatever has caught their interest.
Tail All Puffed Up
A tail that suddenly goes big and fluffy (like a bottlebrush) means your cat is feeling startled or threatened.
“Yikes! I need to look big and scary!”
You’ll often see this during a sudden fright or conflict, especially with other animals.
Tail Wrapped Around You (or Another Cat)
This is one of the sweetest signals—cats sometimes curl their tails around your leg, your hand, or another cat.
“You’re my friend. I trust you.”
It’s a sign of bonding and comfort, like a little feline hug.
Tail Wrapped Around Their Own Body
If your cat is sitting or lying down with their tail wrapped tightly around their body, they may be feeling scared, defensive, in pain, or unwell.
If you notice this, it’s best to give them space and check that their environment is calm, quiet, and free from anything that could be causing them stress.
Tail Flicking While Lying Down or Sat
If your cat’s lying down but the tip of their tail is flicking, they’re not totally relaxed.
“I see what’s going on, and I’m deciding how I feel about it.”
Sometimes this shows mild irritation, playfulness, or curiosity. Read the context of what's happening in the environment (are they playing? Are you petting them?). Give them some space and watch what they do next before interacting again.
Tail Thumping
If your cat is thrashing or thumping their tail, they’re feeling irritated or upset. It’s a warning to back off, especially if you’re petting them. Ignoring it could lead to hissing, swatting, or biting!
A Note About Tail Shape
Some cats (like Manx or bobtail breeds) have naturally short or kinked tails and may use other body language a bit more, like ears, eyes, and body posture. That doesn’t make them any less expressive! They’ve just got their own style and other signs to look out for.
Your cat’s tail is like a little emotional compass - paying attention to it can help you understand what they need, when they want cuddles, or when it’s time to back off and give them space.
The more we learn to speak their language, the more we are able to respect them and the closer our bond becomes. 🥰
